History of Shree Shyam Mandir Khatu Shyam Ji
The story of Khatu Shyam Baba started from the Mahabharata period. Here we would like to tell you that the real name of Shyam Baba was “Barbareek“. Barbareek was the son of Ghatotkaksha, the son of Pandu’s son Bhima. From childhood, Barbarik had all the qualities that it takes to become a great warrior. He learned the skill of fighting from his mother and Shri Krishna. Apart from this, by doing severe penance of the Mother Goddess, he got three arrows in the boon, which come back to him without any aim. These three arrows were enough to make him victorious in all three worlds.
Once he came to know that the Dharma Yudh (Mahabharata) was about to begin between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, he also expressed his desire to see this war to his mother. When Barbareek came to seek blessings from his mother for this, his mother took a promise from him. In the verse, the mother of Barbarik said that if you had to fight in this war, then you will fight the war from whichever side you lose. Then Barbarik Ji gave this promise to his mother and came to Kuruchetra to see the war.
This religious war between Pandavas and Kauravas is known as “Mahabharata”. This war was fought in Kurukshetra. Lord Krishna was on the side of the Pandavas and there were many great warriors and armies on the side of the Kauravas. When Lord Krishna saw Barbarik, he wanted to know who is this warrior who has come alone without an army and had brought only three arrows with him.
For this, Krishna Ji took the form of a Brahmin and came to Barbarik and started saying who are you, who has brought only three arrows with you, without an army. On this, Barbarik said that never doubt these three arrows. These three arrows of mine are the arrows of the target, which come back to me with their aim. These three arrows of mine can destroy the whole universe. One arrow of mine is capable of destroying an entire army.
On this matter of Barbarik, Krishna Ji wanted to take his test. For this Shri Krishna Ji and Barbarik came near a peepal tree. Then Krishna Ji told Barbarik that if it is so, then show all the leaves of this Peepal tree. On this, Barbarik accepted the challenge of Shri Krishna.
Lord Krishna pressed a peepal leaf under his feet to take on Barbarik. After this, Barbarik recited a mantra and targeted all the leaves with one of his arrows. When Barbarik’s arrow came close to Shri Krishna’s feet, then Barbarika said to Shri Krishna that a leaf is burie under your foot, please remove your foot from that leaf or else your foot may get hurt by this arrow.
After passing the examination, Shri Krishna Ji asked Barbarik on whose side he would fight in the war. Then Barbarik narrated the promise to Shri Krishna Ji which he had given to his mother and said that in this war (Mahabharata) which side looking as losing, he will fight from that side. Hearing this from Barbarik, Shri Krishna understood that in this way this crusade (Mahabharata) would never end. On this Shri Krishna Ji demanded donation from him to stop Barbarik and said that you are a very big and great warrior and I am a poor Brahmin. Please donate something to me so that I can get some help.
On this, Barbarik said what do you want Brahmin. I’ll give you whatever you want. On this Shri Krishna Ji asked Barbarik to donate his head. Barbarik said O Brahmin, I will definitely donate my head to you, but you tell me who you are. Then Shri Krishna Ji showed his true form to Barbarik. Then Barbarik folded both his hands and said to Shri Krishna that O Lord! I will surely donate my head to you, but I have one wish that I want to see this war of religions complete.
After this, on Phagun Shukla Dwadashi, Barbarik donated his head by cutting off his head at the feet of Shri Krishna. On this, Lord Krishna was please and accept the wish of Barbarika and give him a boon that in Kaliyuga you will be worship in my name and your name will remain immortal in the pages of history.
That’s why Barbarik is called “Sheesh Ke Daani“. Then Shri Krishna Ji placed the head of Barbarik at the place from where Barbarik had seen the Mahabharata with his eyes till the end. This war (Mahabharata) was fought for 18 days. After the end of the war, the Pandavas came to Barbarika and Shri Krishna and started praising their skills and said one by one that it is because of me that this war has been won. On this, Barbarik said that you have won this crusade because of Shri Krishna Ji. Then all the Pandavas realized their pride and came out of their pride and bowed down to Shri Krishna and Barbarik.
